AKA:
  Whitebait (Gulf Coast), Pilchard (Keys and Florida East Coast), Horse Minnow (Large baits). Often mistaken for a Thread Herring.


Prominent Features:
  Silvery body, deeply curved belly, flat sides, back can be grey to blue to green. Easiest way to differentiate from a Thread Herring - the eye is larger and no “thread” from dorsal fin. Sized 3” to 6” long. Tend to school inshore or near shore around structure and grass flats.



Uses:
  Snapper on the bottom or free lined on the surface.  A favorite for mackerel free lined.  Often tossed as whole baits for chumming.  Can be ground as chum.
