Genus – Illex
AKA: East Coast Squid
Prominent features: Produced world wide, the Illex squid is one of the most widely used baits anywhere. It has a slightly darker, off-white “chocolate” color and thicker tube wall than the Loligo species of squid. Illex squid also contains a higher content of “ink” which makes it a little messy to handle, but also holds a stronger scent to attract fish. These qualities make for an excellent fish bait and holds well on a hook.
Popular uses: Squid is one of the most versatile baits available to fishermen. It’s great bottom bait for grouper and snapper. May be used whole or as a cut bait. Bait with squid from a pier, boat or even from shore, you will most likely catch anything that will bite a hook. The larger squids are deep dropped for swordfish, or rigged and trolled for large gamefish.
