Sardine Sardinella longiceps
AKA:
Prominent Features: Slender, elongated body. Silvery sides but not as shiny as our domestic Spanish sardine. Size usually 4” to 6”. A faint golden spot behind gill opening, followed by a faint golden midlateral line; a distinct black spot at hind border of gill cover (absence of pigment).
Use: A very versatile bait. Similar to our domestic sardine, yet firmer and oilier. Excellent bottom bait for all types of groupers and snappers. May be used as a cut bait, stripped bait or as a whole fish. Also works well free-lined to king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and cobia. Just about any fish will feed on this sardine.
Other uses: Cut fish into 2 or 3 pieces to chum or grind fine for an excellent, bloody chum.
