Spanish Sardine Sardinella aurita
Local Names: sardine, ‘dean, herring
Prominent Features: Slender, elongated body. Silvery sides and green to blue-gray back. Size usually 4” to 7”. This baitfish is actually a herring.
Most popular uses: One of the most popular baits available. Excellent bottom bait for all types of groupers and snappers. May be used as a cut bait, stripped bait or as a whole fish. Also works well
free-lined to king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and cobia. Just about any fish will feed on a sardine.
Other uses: Cut fish into 2 or 3 pieces to chum or grind fine for an excellent, bloody chum.
Availability: Produced in the northern Gulf of Mexico
