Chums

Chum is by definition "a luring substance which purpose is to attract fish or, where legal, game".

Chum comes in many forms depending on what specific fish or game you are trying to attract. Produced from a combination of various ground baitfishes, small-whole baitfish, cut bait and dry attractants.

We carry an extensive array of chums from a variety of producers as well as product packed to our own specifications. Some chums have added dry attractants such as pure menhaden oil, anise oil or Menhaden Milk. Chums are available in frozen block form, buckets or ready to use mesh bags.

Your chum strategy should, if targeting finfish, always involve attracting the species' forage fish or baitfish.

What makes a quality frozen chum?  Fresh baitfish high in blood, fat and oil content, in that order.  Meat or protein is of least importance. Many chum producers grind fish scraps or shrimp boat by-catch, and add copious amounts of fish oil to fool the customer with an artificial slick. We demand particular fresh baitfish that match the criteria of a first class, quality chum.

Dry chums do not require refrigeration so are convenient and utilize time honored recipes. These are very effective as a convenient ready to use surface bait attractant for cast netting your bait.

For those fishermen that prefer to create their own special chum recipe, see our Fish Attractants and Supplies/Accessories categories for chum enhancers.
